Idioms

This is a cool site that will explain the origins of popular idioms and expressions.

Blackmail
The word “blackmail” becaome popular in the 1800′s and comes from the clan chieftains who ran protection rackets on farmers in Scottland. If the farmers didn’t pay the mail (an old term for rent), the chieftains would steal their cattle and crops. Since this was considered evil, it was considered “black”.

Letters to Walken

United Confederacy Against WWW

How can you not love this:

Gladis Haralski, founder of United Confederacy Against WWW (UCAWWW) announced last week of her ongoing campaign to shut down the internet.

In an interview Gladis proclaims the destructive way in which we use the internet degenerates society’s standards. “The internet is nothing but filth to steal our children from God and truth”, says Gladis…

My favorite part:

When Gladis was asked by reporters how she planned to reach out to others across the country she said, “We have many ongoing projects, and soon we’ll be proud to announce the grand opening of our website.”

This reminds me of one of my favorite Sideshow Bob quotes; “By the way, I’m aware of the irony of appearing on TV in order to decry it so don’t bother pointing that out. “
