Plants in Motion

Wonderful site.

With few exceptions, plants grow and change on a time scale that is too slow for us to observe in real time. Time-lapse photography is a simple technique that allows us to see the movements of plants and clearly demonstrates that plants are living and capable of some extraordinary things. This is done by capturing a series of images at intervals ranging from minutes to hours apart. The images can then be viewed in rapid succession, much like a flip book. The effect is to compress into a short period, the changes that occurred over a relatively long period of time.

Be sure to check out the Morning Glory Twining.

The Degree Confluence Project

I have posted about this before but it is definitely worth another look.

The goal of the project is to visit each of the latitude and longitude integer degree intersections in the world, and to take pictures at each location. The pictures and stories will then be posted here.

World Sunlight Map

rectangular_1600.jpg

Known as a rectangular projection, this map is one way of looking at the spherical Earth as a flat map. Both the size of continents and their shape get distorted as you move away from the equator. Compare this with a Mercator projection, which greatly distorts sizes in favor of keeping the shapes correct, or a Peters projection which distorts shapes but gives a true indication of relative size.

Selling Out Again

I tried Google Adsense once before and it didn’t work out too well. My traffic has been increasing lately which means my bandwidth is starting to take a hit meaning this is starting to become an expensive hobby so I am going to give it another try. It was between this or using Idle Words idea of having macropatrons.

Prophecy of Popes

I do love Wikipedia.

The prophecy is purportedly based on a revelation experienced by Saint Malachy, a 12th century bishop of Armagh in Ireland. According to those who support the prophecy’s authenticity, Malachy was summoned to Rome in 1139 by Pope Innocent II. While there, he experienced a vision of all future popes, which he recorded in a sequence of cryptic phrases. This manuscript was allegedly deposited in the Roman Archive by Innocent, and thereafter forgotten.

Google’s Golden Triangle

New EyeTracking Study verifies the importance of page position and rank in both Organic and PPC search results for visibility and click through in Google.

(PRWEB) March 1, 2005 — A joint eye tracking study conducted by search marketing firms Enquiro and Did-it.com and eye tracking firm Eyetools has shown that the vast majority of eye tracking activity during a search happens in a triangle at the top of the search results page indicating that the areas of maximum interest create a “golden triangle.”

The first phase of the study was conducted with 50 people in Eyetools’ eye tracking lab in San Francisco, California and presented panel participants with 5 distinct scenarios that would require the use of a search engine. Google was used as the search engine in all of the instances.
